What is semaglutide?

Semaglutide belongs to the group of GLP-1 receptor agonists and was initially used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Its weekly injections help reduce blood sugar levels and lower cardiovascular risks in patients with diabetes.

How does it work?

Semaglutide suppresses appetite by acting on the relevant centers in the brain, creating a feeling of fullness, which leads to weight loss. This mechanism of action has made the drug popular in recent months as a weight loss aid, sparking a real craze.

Semaglutide without a Diabetes Diagnosis

Due to its effectiveness, semaglutide has been used for some time not only for diabetes but also for treating obesity in people without the condition. Research shows that patients with obesity (body mass index of 30 or higher) lose significant weight while using the drug. However, its use is only possible under medical supervision, in combination with a low-calorie diet and increased physical activity. In 2021, semaglutide under the brand name Wegovy was approved in the U.S. for obesity treatment. It was approved in Germany in January 2022, but has not yet been made available due to high demand in the U.S.

An Easy Way to Lose Weight or a Dangerous Trend?

The idea of easy weight loss through injections sounds tempting, so it’s no surprise that semaglutide has sparked a lot of attention. But it’s not that simple! The drug is only available by prescription. Its use requires mandatory medical supervision to monitor possible long-term health effects and adjust therapy if necessary.

Like any medication, semaglutide can have side effects, especially with long-term use. These include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation, dizziness, gallstone formation, altered taste, and skin reactions. Additionally, it’s important to understand that weight loss only lasts while the drug is being taken. Experience with patients suffering from type 2 diabetes shows that the dosage has to be constantly increased unless lifestyle changes are made.

Another concerning factor is the shortage of the drug on the market. Due to the surge in demand among healthy people, diabetics who actually need semaglutide are facing a shortage.

Semaglutide is an effective drug that helps patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity. However, its use for people with only slight excess weight is unjustified and not recommended. There are many safer and more sustainable ways to lose weight, with the most important being a healthy lifestyle: regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and stress management.

Additionally, alternative programs exist, such as the low-insulin weight loss program developed by the Western German Diabetes and Health Center (WDGZ). This program is based on dietary adjustments and the use of formula diets, allowing for long-term blood sugar reduction and weight control.

Before starting any therapy, it is always recommended to consult with a doctor or dietitian. WDGZ specialists are ready to offer optimal consultation and support in matters related to diabetes, nutrition, and safe weight loss.
