Marienhospital in Düsseldorf – A Specialized Oncology Center
Clinic for Oncology, Hematology, and Palliative Medicine
The clinic specializes in the diagnosis and medical treatment of tumors of internal organs (solid tumors and carcinomas), connective and musculoskeletal tissues (so-called sarcomas), as well as diseases of the blood and lymphatic systems (lymphomas and leukemias). Services also include autologous stem cell transplantation, in which a patient’s own cells, collected from blood or bone marrow, are reintroduced into the body after special processing to restore blood-forming function.
Since the summer of 2012, the clinic has been headed by Prof. Dr. A. Giagounidis, who is ranked among Germany’s top 10 oncologists by Focus magazine.
The clinic also hosts a research department with its own hematological laboratory. A broad range of clinical studies are conducted here, aimed at developing new drugs and vaccines for the treatment of cancer. Thanks to this, patients often gain early access to the latest therapies in Germany.
Clinic for Radiation Therapy and Radio-Oncology
Approximately 50% of patients with malignant diseases require radiation therapy. When needed, this is provided as part of interdisciplinary care in the Clinic for Radiation Oncology under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Karl-Axel Hartmann.
Decisions regarding the timing of radiation therapy (before or after surgery) and its combination with other treatments (e.g., chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or monoclonal antibody therapy) are made collaboratively with physicians from various specialties. This interdisciplinary coordination takes place through regular tumor boards within the Interdisciplinary Oncology Center (IOZ), ensuring that patients benefit from the full expertise of all clinics within the complex.
