Orthopaedics, Traumatology, Reconstructive Surgery, and Neurosurgery – Sana RheinRegio Trauma Centre

As a certified trauma centre in Germany, the Department of Orthopaedics, Traumatology, and Reconstructive Surgery at the Sana clinical complex, led by Dr. Alexander Olk, provides high-level, round-the-clock medical care for patients with severe injuries, adhering to unified quality standards.

The trauma department emphasizes the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques, focusing on restoring motor functions after complex injuries to bones, soft tissues, and joints.

The neurosurgery clinic, under the leadership of Dr. Thomas Eichenhofer and Professor Dr. Kai Bernsmann, specializes in spinal injuries, commonly resulting from traffic accidents, high falls, or in patients with severe multiple traumas. Unstable spinal fractures can lead to neurological impairments and, in extreme cases, paralysis.

The department provides 24/7 emergency medical care with capabilities for spinal stabilization and, if necessary, spinal cord decompression. Treatment encompasses injuries to all spinal regions, employing both anterior (ventral) and posterior (dorsal) stabilization methods, as well as minimally invasive vertebral body replacements when possible.

Dr. Alexander Olk’s department, in collaboration with the neurosurgery department, has consistently demonstrated high-quality medical care. Through close interdisciplinary cooperation, both departments offer a comprehensive range of surgical and conservative treatments for nearly all musculoskeletal diseases and injuries.

Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Clinic

The Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Clinic was established as the first specialized clinic in Germany exclusively dedicated to treating these conditions. The goal of achieving unique quality through a structured approach and a high volume of successful surgeries was realized in a short time.

Chief physician Dr. Thomas Sonnenberg possesses outstanding expertise in this field, with over 30 years of experience in obesity surgery and more than 15,000 successfully treated patients. He also successfully re-certified the clinic as a competence centre for obesity and metabolic surgery at

The clinic collaborates closely with the Obesity Centre NRW Sana XL and various specialists (nutrition consultants, physiotherapists, psychotherapists, etc.) to achieve therapeutic goals: weight reduction, elimination of comorbidities, and long-term stabilization of the patient’s condition.

Post-Bariatric Surgery and Plastic Medicine

The Post-Bariatric Surgery and Liposuction Clinic, along with the Centre for Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery led by Professor Dr. Andreas Wolter, is a highly specialized medical facility with many years of experience. All types of reconstructive surgeries (according to WHO standards) are performed here to correct skin and soft tissues after significant weight loss resulting from bariatric interventions.

For many years, the clinic has collaborated with its own department of plastic and aesthetic surgery. Operations are typically combined with liposuction to optimally restore body contours while minimizing impact on tissues, nerves, and lymphatic vessels.

Main Specialties:

  • Pulmonology and Lung Diseases Centre
  • Cardiology
  • Oncology and Immunotherapy, Hematology
  • Senology (Breast Oncology)
  • Centre for Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery
  • Visceral Centre (Diseases of Abdominal Organs and Digestive Tract)
  • Vascular Surgery Centre

Oncology and Cardiology Center

The primary focus of the centre, led by Dr. med. Markus Dommach, is the pharmaceutical treatment of oncological diseases. All therapeutic decisions are made during interdisciplinary oncology conferences in close cooperation with specialized departments of the clinic, as well as with other hospitals, such as the Association of Catholic Clinics of Duesseldorf (VKKD) and Sana Benrath Hospital.

Senology Clinic

One of the key areas of the Sana clinic complex is the treatment of breast cancer at the Senology Clinic under the direction of Dr. med. Bjorn-Wieland Lisboa. The clinic provides top-level care for all breast diseases and malformations, including congenital anomalies and oncological conditions, with particular focus on breast cancer.

Three principles form the foundation of our treatment:

  • Oncological safety
The tumor is radically removed within healthy tissue margins, ensuring the best conditions for recovery.
  • Aesthetic outcome of the surgery
We place great importance on our patients being satisfied with the cosmetic result. Through knowledge and application of breast reconstructive techniques — including implants and myocutaneous flap procedures — we can offer the optimal therapy in each individual case.
  • Individualized approach
In most cases, there is more than one surgical approach to solving a problem. It is important to us that women are well-informed and actively participate in the decision-making process.

Postoperative Therapy:

After surgery, the patient’s condition is discussed in an interdisciplinary tumor board. Here, specialists from the relevant fields discuss the subsequent pharmaceutical and/or radiation therapy.

The results of the conference will be discussed with you in detail at a personal appointment, to which you are welcome to bring family members or trusted individuals.

You are in good hands – we take care of you.

Surgical Department

The surgical department of the Gerresheim Clinic, led by Dr. med. Mark Lienert, has 55 beds and treats over 3,000 inpatients annually. The clinic includes general and visceral surgery, thoracic surgery, thyroid surgery, and trauma surgery.

The main focus of visceral surgery is the treatment of benign and malignant intestinal diseases. The department includes a certified gastroenterology centre. The preferred surgical technique is minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery, applicable to all planned benign surgeries. This includes gallbladder removal, inguinal hernia repair, appendectomy, and minimally invasive colon surgery.

This clinic not only utilizes all modern therapeutic methods, but also offers specialized services in advanced gastroenterology, including various diagnostic and therapeutic interventional endoscopic procedures and intensive care therapy.

Vascular Centre

Another priority area is the Sana RheinRuhr Regio Vascular Centre, led by Professor Dr. med. Ralf Kolvenbach.

Minimally Invasive Aortic Aneurysm Therapy

Due to demographic changes and the recognition that five percent of people over 65 — and sometimes younger — develop aortic aneurysms, along with the increasing severity of accompanying cardiovascular diseases, treatment options have significantly developed and become standardized in recent years.

Today, the preferred method is the minimally invasive placement of a so-called stent-graft via the groin and pelvic arteries into the abdominal aorta. This allows the aneurysm to be stabilized from within and prevents pressure on the aortic wall. As a result, even very elderly patients can be treated. Unlike traditional open surgery, this method affects the patient’s quality of life for only a few days.

Carotid Artery Interventions to Prevent Imminent Stroke

More than one million people in Germany have carotid artery narrowing of over 50 percent due to calcium or fat deposits (plaques). Interventions in the carotid artery are typically carried out to prevent an impending stroke and its potential consequences, such as paralysis, speech disorders, or permanent disability.

Ultrasound examination can detect carotid artery narrowing caused by deposits in just a few minutes. In some cases, stents may be used instead of open surgery. A special catheter is inserted through a groin blood vessel into the carotid artery. The narrowing is then widened using a balloon, and a metal vascular support (stent) is placed. Professor Kolvenbach and his team at the Sana RheinRuhr Regio Vascular Centre have many years of extensive experience in carotid artery surgeries and, in collaboration with radiologists, in minimally invasive stent procedures

Therapy for Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)

Peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) is a condition affecting the blood vessels of the legs, and less commonly the arms, in which atherosclerosis leads to severe narrowing or even complete blockage of the vessels, disrupting blood flow to the limbs. Conditions of the leg arteries include intermittent claudication and the risk of limb loss.

In recent years, endovascular techniques that do not require large incisions have been increasingly used. These methods include balloon dilation and atherectomy (plaque removal). In some cases, vascular specialists also recommend placing a stent — a thin wire mesh tube that helps keep narrowed vessels open. Even if all arteries are blocked, in certain cases, the leg can still be saved through new bypass techniques.
