Treatment of lymph nodes for breast cancer in Germany
Innovative therapies: sentinel node biopsy, PET-CT and personalized therapy.

Lymph nodes are a key indicator of the spread of breast cancer (BC). RheinRegio Klinik Zentrum uses innovative methods to assess the condition of the lymph nodes, which allows you to accurately determine the stage of the disease and develop a personalized treatment plan.
The role of lymph nodes in breast cancer
The lymphatic system performs two important functions:
- Filtration – traps tumor cells
- Indication – node damage indicates the aggressiveness of cancer
The main groups of lymph nodes for breast cancer:
- Axillary (axillary) – most often affected
- Intrathoracic (parasternal)
- Supraclavicular
- Sentinels are the first on the path of lymph outflow
Symptoms of lymph node damage in breast cancer
Main manifestations:
- Enlargement and thickening of the axillary, supra- and subclavian lymph nodes
- Pain or discomfort in the armpit area
- Restricted mobility of lymph nodes (adherence to surrounding tissues)
- Swelling of the arm (lymphedema) with significant damage
- Detection of altered nodes on ultrasound/mammography without external symptoms (in the early stages)
Important:
▪️ In 25-30% of patients, lymph node damage is detected before complaints appear
▪️ Absence of symptoms does not exclude micrometastatic lesions
▪️ Always requires histological confirmation (biopsy)
Diagnosis of symptoms of lymph node involvement in breast cancer at RheinRegio Klinik Zentrum
- Physical examination
- Palpation of axillary, supra- and subclavian lymph nodes
- Assessing size, mobility and tenderness
- Ultrasound examination (ultrasound) with Dopplerography
- Determination of structural changes in lymph nodes
- Blood flow assessment to detect malignant signs
- Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy
- Minimally invasive procedure with high diagnostic accuracy
- Performed using a radiopharmaceutical and/or blue dye
- Tomographic methods (CT/MRI/PET-CT)
- Visualization of deep lymph nodes
- Detection of distant metastases
- Histological and immunohistochemical examination
- Accurate determination of the extent of damage
- Selection of personalized therapy based on molecular markers
Each direction is supervised by advanced oncologists.

Treatment methods for lymph node involvement in breast cancer
-
In the absence of metastases
- Preservation of nodes (in early stages)
- Targeted therapy for prevention
If 1-3 nodes are affected
- Level I-II lymph node dissection
- Combined treatment:
- Radiation therapy to the node area
- Chemotherapy according to modern protocols
With massive damage
- Extended lymph node dissection
- Systemic therapy (chemo-, immuno-, hormonal therapy)
Rehabilitation
- Lymphatic drainage massage for the prevention of lymphostasis
- Special exercises
- Long-term observation by an oncologist
In Germany, the approach to the treatment of lymph nodes for breast cancer is based on the latest research and individual characteristics of the tumor. RheinRegio Klinik Zentrum offers a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
