Symptoms of renal cell carcinoma
In the early stages, the disease is often asymptomatic. Characteristic features:
- Hematuria (blood in the urine) is the main symptom
- Lower back pain on one side
- Palpable mass in the kidney area
- Weight loss for no apparent reason
- Persistent increase in temperature
- Varicocele (in men)
- Arterial hypertension
If these symptoms appear, an urgent urological examination is necessary.

Classification and stages of renal cell carcinoma
Histological options:
- Clear cell (70-80%) – the most common
- Papillary (10-15%)
- Chromophobic (5%)
- Collecting duct cancer (1%) – most aggressive
TNM staging:
- Stage I: tumor ≤7 cm within the kidney
- Stage II: tumor >7 cm without spread
- Stage III: damage to the adrenal gland/veins or regional lymph nodes
- Stage IV: distant metastases

Surgical treatment

- Radical nephrectomy with removal of tissue and lymph nodes

Survival prognosis
5-year survival by stage (clear cell subtype):
- Localized (Stage I–II, no metastases): 80–93%
- Locally distributed (III stage, lymph node involvement): 50–70%
- Metastatic (IV stage): 12–30% (but before 40–50% with a combination of immuno- and targeted therapy)
