Treatment of throat angioma in Germany

Modern approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of throat angioma: from endoscopy to minimally invasive methods

Throat angioma is a benign vascular formation that develops from blood (hemangioma) or lymphatic (lymphangioma) vessels. At RheinRegio Klinik Zentrum, minimally invasive removal methods are used to preserve the functions of the larynx and minimize the risk of complications.

Symptoms of throat angioma

Small sizes (up to 1 cm):

  • Foreign body sensation
  • Soreness
  • Periodic coughing

Large formations (>2 cm):

  • Hoarseness (if the vocal cords are affected)
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Shortness of breath (due to airway obstruction)
  • Hemoptysis (if hemangioma is injured)

Dangerous complications:

  • Asphyxia (when the lumen of the larynx is blocked)
  • Massive bleeding

Diagnosis of throat angioma at RheinRegio Klinik Zentrum

  • Endoscopy of the larynx with NBI mode (assessment of vascularization)
  • Ultrasound with Doppler – determining the depth of germination
  • MRI of soft tissues of the neck – for differentiation from malignant processes
  • Biopsy (only if the diagnosis is questionable)

Each direction is supervised by advanced oncologists.

Classification and stages of throat angioma

    By type of vascular lesion:

    • Capillary (small vessels, superficial)
    • Cavernous (large cavities, deep)
    • Venous (dilated veins)

    By localization:

    • Vocal cords
    • Epiglottis
    • Subglottic space
    • Throat

    According to the clinical course:

    • Asymptomatic (random find)
    • Symptomatic (hoarseness, dysphagia, bleeding)

    Stages of throat angioma

(Benign lesions do not have classical stages, but are graded by size and effect on function)

    • Small (<1 cm) – asymptomatic
    • Average (1–3 cm) – moderate symptoms
    • Large (>3 cm) – risk of respiratory obstruction/bleeding

    Note:

    • Angiomas do not become malignant, but require control during growth.
    • Main methods of treatment: laser coagulation, cryodestruction, sclerotherapy.

    Treatment methods for throat angioma

    Minimally invasive technologies

    • Laser coagulation (CO2 laser) – for superficial angiomas
    • Radio wave ablation – bloodless removal
    • Cryodestruction – for small formations

    Sclerotherapy

    • Introduction of ethoxysclerol into tumor vessels
    • Course of 2-3 procedures

    Open surgery

    • Microlaryngoscopic resection
    • Endoscopic microlaryngosurgery

    Indications for surgery:

    • Fast growth
    • Bleeding
    • Threat of asphyxia

    Survival prognosis

    • After complete removal – 100% cure
    • Risk of relapse – <5%
