Treatment of leukemia in Germany
Innovative methods of therapy: from genetic analysis to bone marrow transplantation

Leukemia is a malignant disease of the hematopoietic system in which abnormal blood cells are formed in the bone marrow. RheinRegio Klinik Zentrum uses advanced treatment protocols, including targeted therapy and stem cell transplantation. Our goal is to achieve stable remission even in difficult cases.
Symptoms of leukemia
Signs depend on the type of disease (acute/chronic) and stage:
General manifestations
- Pale skin, weakness (anemia)
- Frequent infections (decreased white blood cells)
- Bleeding gums, bruising (thrombocytopenia)
- Enlarged lymph nodes, liver and spleen
- Night sweats, weight loss
Features by Type
Acute leukemia:
- Rapid development (weeks)
- High temperature
- Hemorrhagic syndrome
Chronic leukemia:
- Long-term asymptomatic course
- Fatigue, heaviness in the stomach
Important: In children, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is often disguised as ARVI.
Diagnosis of leukemia at RheinRegio Klinik Zentrum
At RheinRegio Klinik Zentrum we carry out:
- Detailed blood test – blast cells, cytopenia.
- Sternal puncture – examination of the bone marrow.
- Cytochemistry and immunophenotyping – determining the type of leukemia.
- Molecular genetic tests (FISH, PCR):
- Philadelphia chromosome in CML.
- Mutations of FLT3, NPM1 in AML.
- CT/MRI – assessment of damage to lymph nodes and organs.
Example: In AML, identification of an IDH1 mutation makes it possible to prescribe targeted therapy (ivosidenib).
Each direction is supervised by advanced oncologists.

Classification and stages of leukemia
Main types
- Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is more common in children.
- Acute myeloid leukemia (AML)—predominant in adults.
- Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) has a slow course.
- Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is associated with the Philadelphia chromosome.
Stages (for chronic forms)
- Initial: Asymptomatic, detected by blood test.
- Expanded: Clinical manifestations.
- Terminal: Blast crisis (aggressive course).
Cancer treatment methods
1. Chemotherapy
- Induction of remission – destruction of blast cells.
- Consolidation – consolidation of the result.
2. Targeted therapy
- Imatinib (for CML) – blocks the BCR-ABL protein.
- Monoclonal antibodies (rituximab for B-cell leukemia).
3. Bone marrow transplantation
- Allogeneic – from a donor (the main method for AML).
- Autologous – the patient’s own stem cells.
4. Radiation therapy
- Prevention of neuroleukemia (for ALL).
5. Immunotherapy
- CAR-T cells – for relapses of ALL.
Survival prognosis
- ALL in children – 90% 5-year survival rate.
- CML – 85% of patients live 10+ years on imatinib.
- Relapsed AML – 50% chance of remission after transplantation.
Important: Early diagnosis improves the prognosis by 2–3 times.
