Treatment of pancreatic cancer in Germany
Modern methods of treating pancreatic cancer: from early diagnosis to personalized therapy

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive cancers, which can be asymptomatic for a long time. In advanced stages, the disease progresses rapidly, making early diagnosis and timely treatment critical.
RheinRegio Klinik Zentrum uses advanced diagnostic and therapeutic methods, including Whipple surgery (pancreaticoduodenectomy), neoadjuvant therapy, targeted treatment and modern chemotherapy protocols. Our world-class oncologists use the latest equipment and customized treatment regimens to increase the chances of a successful outcome, even in difficult cases.
Symptoms of pancreatic cancer
In the early stages, the disease often has no obvious signs, but as the tumor grows, the following appear:
- Jaundice (due to compression of the bile ducts)
- Dull pain in the upper abdomen, radiating to the back
- Sudden weight loss for no apparent reason
- Nausea, vomiting, indigestion
- Diabetes mellitus (sudden onset)
- Light stool and dark urine
If you have these symptoms, it is important to get tested immediately – early diagnosis significantly improves the prognosis
Diagnosis of pancreatic cancer at RheinRegio Klinik Zentrum
We provide a complete and accurate examination, including:
- CT, MRI and PET-CT – to determine the location and stage of the tumor.
- Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) – detailed visualization of the tumor.
- Biopsy with histology confirms the diagnosis.
- Tests for tumor markers (CA 19-9, CEA).
- Genetic testing – to select personalized therapy.
Our doctors use the latest advances in medical science to make a diagnosis as quickly and accurately as possible.
Each direction is supervised by advanced oncologists.

Classification and stages of pancreatic cancer
The disease is classified according to the TNM system:
- Stage I – a small tumor within the pancreas.
- Stage II – germination into adjacent tissues or lymph nodes.
- Stage III – damage to large vessels and nerves.
- Stage IV – distant metastases (liver, lungs, peritoneum).
The earlier cancer is detected, the higher the chances of successful treatment.
Treatment methods for pancreatic cancer
Depending on the stage and type of tumor, the following are used:
Surgical treatment
- Whipple’s operation – removal of the head of the pancreas, part of the stomach and duodenum.
- Distal resection – if the body or tail of the gland is affected.
- Palliative operations – to restore the patency of the bile ducts and intestines.
Chemotherapy and targeted therapy
- FOLFIRINOX, gemzar – standard schemes.
- Immunotherapy and molecularly targeted treatment – for selected tumor types.
Radiotherapy
- IMRT (intensity modulated radiation therapy) – precise targeting of the tumor.
- SBRT (stereotactic radiosurgery) – for inoperable cases.
Neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapy
- Reduction of tumor before surgery.
- Destruction of residual cells after surgery.
Survival prognosis
5-year survival rate:
- Localized tumor (I–II stages): 10–20%
- Locally advanced cancer (III stage): 5–7%
- Metastatic (IV stage): 1–3%
Prognosis factors:
- Resectability of the tumor (higher chance after surgery)
- Size <2 cm without metastases
- Good response to chemotherapy (FOLFIRINOX, gemcitabine)
- General condition of the patient (Karnovsky index)
Note: Early diagnosis is rare (more often detected in later stages). New methods (immunotherapy, targeted drugs) are being studied in clinical trials
