Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) in Germany
Innovative treatment of neuroendocrine tumors in Germany

Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) is an advanced method for the treatment of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), combining high selectivity with a powerful therapeutic effect. This technology is used in patients with progressive, difficult to resect tumors, especially those with advanced disease. At the RheinRegio Klinik Zentrum, PRRT is carried out in full compliance with European protocols and using the latest achievements of medical science
What is PRRT: description of the method
PRRT is targeted radiation therapy based on the use of radionuclide drugs that specifically affect tumor cells. The targets are somatostatin receptors present on the surface of neuroendocrine cells. The radioactive isotope (most often ^177Lu) binds to somatostatin analogues and accumulates directly in tumor tissues, minimizing damage to healthy cells.
The method is based on the systemic administration of a radiopharmaceutical, which spreads throughout the body and concentrates in areas with high receptor expression. Next, a localized effect of radiation occurs, which makes it possible to destroy tumor cells and stop the growth of metastases.
Indications for PRRT
PRRT is indicated for patients with neuroendocrine tumors of various locations, including:
- gastroenteropancreatic NETs;
- bronchopulmonary tumors;
- tumors that produce hormones.
The method is especially effective in cases of high expression of somatostatin receptors and the presence of a progressive course of the disease, when other types of treatment (surgery, chemotherapy) have been insufficient.
Contraindications
Contraindications to PRRT include:
- severe renal failure;
- severe forms of leukopenia and thrombocytopenia;
- absence of somatostatin receptors in tumor tissues;
- pregnancy and lactation period.
Before starting therapy, RheinRegio Klinik Zentrum performs a thorough and complete diagnosis, including scintigraphy using octreotides and CT/MRI, which allows us to accurately determine the patient’s suitability for this type of treatment.
Each direction is supervised by advanced oncologists.

PRRT in Germany: the RheinRegio Klinik Zentrum approach
At RheinRegio Klinik Zentrum, patients receive an individual treatment protocol based on the results of PET-CT and molecular genetic studies. The drugs used, such as ^177Lu-DOTATATE, are highly effective and safe.
The PRRT procedure is carried out in several courses at intervals of 6–10 weeks. The entire process is accompanied by constant monitoring of the patient’s condition, support at all stages of treatment and adaptation of the treatment plan as necessary. The clinic provides 100% confidentiality and the highest level of service.
