PSMA therapy in Germany
PSMA-targeted therapy for prostate cancer: from accurate diagnosis to innovative treatment

PSMA therapy is a breakthrough method of radionuclide treatment of metastatic prostate cancer, especially effective in castration-resistant forms. The RheinRegio Klinik Zentrum uses advanced technology using lutetium-177 (¹⁷⁷Lu-PSMA), which precisely targets cancer cells while minimizing the impact on healthy tissue.
What is PSMA therapy?
PSMA (prostate-specific membrane antigen) is a protein that is produced in large quantities by prostate cancer cells in 90% of cases. The method is based on targeted effects:
- The radiopharmaceutical (¹⁷⁷Lu-PSMA) binds to PSMA antigens.
- Lutetium-177 beta radiation destroys tumors and metastases.
Advantages over chemotherapy:
- Targeted effect only on cancer cells.
- Fewer side effects (no systemic damage).
- Effective in resistant forms of prostate cancer.
Indications for PSMA therapy
The method is used when:
- Metastatic prostate cancer (bones, lymph nodes, liver).
- Castration-resistant adenocarcinoma (CRPC).
- Relapses after hormonal/chemotherapy.
- Ineffectiveness of other methods.
Contraindications:
- Severe renal failure.
- Low PSMA expression (confirmed by PET-CT).
Each direction is supervised by advanced oncologists.

Diagnosis before PSMA therapy
At RheinRegio Klinik Zentrum we carry out:
- PSMA-PET/CT – detection of foci with high antigen expression.
- Biopsy + histology – confirmation of adenocarcinoma.
- Blood tests (PSA, creatinine, hemoglobin).
- Bone scintigraphy – assessment of bone metastases.
How is the treatment carried out?
- Preparation:
- Discontinuation of certain medications (eg, bisphosphonates).
- Hydration (to protect the kidneys).
- Administration of the drug:
- Intravenous infusion of ¹⁷⁷Lu-PSMA (5-7 minutes).
- Course: 4-6 cycles with an interval of 6-8 weeks.
- Monitoring:
- PSA monitoring, MRI/PET-CT after 2-3 cycles.
Side effects (usually mild):
- Dry mouth, fatigue.
- Temporary decrease in platelet/leukocyte levels.
The effectiveness of PSMA therapy
- A decrease in PSA by 50% or more – in 60-70% of patients.
- Reduction of metastases – in 40-50% of cases.
- Improved quality of life – reduced pain, increased activity.
PSMA therapy is a chance for patients with advanced prostate cancer when other methods are powerless. The RheinRegio Klinik Zentrum uses the most modern protocols approved in the EU.
