Radiation therapy for breast cancer – Indications, methods, treatment in Germany

Modern approach to the treatment of breast cancer

Breast cancer (BC) – one of the most common malignant tumors among women. After surgical treatment, one of the key stages of therapy is radiation therapy – a method aimed at destroying remaining cancer cells, reducing the risk of local recurrence and increasing overall survival.

In clinics in Germany, including RheinRegio Klinik Zentrum, radiotherapy is carried out using the latest technologies, which make it possible to precisely target the tumor, minimizing the load on healthy tissue.

What is radiation therapy for breast cancer

Radiation therapy is the use of ionizing radiation to destroy cancer cells. It can be applied:

  • after organ-preserving surgery, as a mandatory part of treatment;
  • after radical mastectomyif there is a risk of relapse;
  • as palliative care, with metastatic forms of the disease;
  • before surgery – in order to reduce the volume of the tumor.

The purpose of treatment is relapse prevention in the breast, chest wall or lymph nodes.

Indications for irradiation

  • Carrying out organ-preserving operations (irradiation is a mandatory component);
  • Detection metastases in lymph nodes;
  • Large tumor size (T3-T4);
  • Positive resection margins after surgery;
  • High risk local relapse;
  • Aggressive molecular tumor subtypes (triple negative, HER2 positive).

Each direction is supervised by advanced oncologists.

    Breast cancer treatment methods

    1. 3D conformal radiotherapy

    Allows you to precisely adjust the radiation beams to the shape of the tumor. Minimizes radiation exposure to surrounding tissue.

    2. IMRT (intensity modulated radiotherapy)

    Changes the intensity of the rays depending on the density of the fabric. Provides maximum accuracy and lower side effects.

    3. IGRT (Image Guided Radiotherapy)

    Allows you to accurately target the tumor with each session due to the built-in imaging system.

    4. Hypofractionated therapy

    Shortened irradiation schemes (for example, 15-16 sessions instead of the traditional 25), which have proven their effectiveness efficiency and safety.

    5. Proton therapy (in selected cases)

    Used for complex localizations and a high risk of damage to the heart or lungs.
